To: Norm Goldstein From: Wes Bethel Subject: Progress Report on ACTI project: Advanced Flux Visualization .... Date: 2 August 1995 Progress: Technical Received proprietary, full-field data from BP. Streamlines - A prototype AVS module was written when computes streamlines through a vector field. This work reproduces that functionality of an existing AVS module but allows extensions which allow implementation of ideas for flux visualization which were generated by this group. The space subdivision technique used is a modified version of a space-subdividing tree published by Al Globus of NASA-Ames in 1991. The numerical method used is a second order Runge-Kutta method which has been widely published. Virtual well "bore" rake. The streamlines algorithm needs a list of starting points from which to proceed with the numerical integration. The virtual well generates such a list of sample points. The first virtual well method had problems due to point sampling in an area of high upward or downward flow. By computing sample points which lie at a user-specified radius away from the virtual well location, this problem can be avoided. VR device control of virtual well. Extensions to the code were written which facilitate placement of the virtual well using a VR input device. Progress: Administrative A copy of an official Data Exchange Agreement was received. This agreement will not work for this project since this project involves a commercial product. The CRADA is out because there is no intellectual property, per se, being generated by this project. We are currently purusing a Memorandum of Understanding. If accepted, this document will be a non-binding agreement between LBNL and the partners. Plans for Next Month Awaiting arrival of 3DView to install at LBNL. Prepare for project review on August 23. Continue working on Memorandum of Understanding with the LBNL Technology Transfer folks. Problem Areas None.
